As our group had landed at the JFK airport in the evening of March 25, the activities commenced the following day with a visit to the headquarters of WE ACT for Environmental Justice. Located in West Harlem, the non-profit organization aims to mobilize the local community around the environmental justice issues affecting the inhabitants of Northern Manhattan. We discussed the objectives of the organization, ways of joining in, as well as challenges it faces in its day-to-day work in Harlem. Afterwards, thanks to the arrangements made by the students from Berlin, we visited the New York office of Der Spiegel where we met with the magazine’s correspondent Philipp Oehmke and talked about the specifics of work in an overseas outpost of a major European periodical. The latter part of the day was devoted to a walk from Lower Manhattan, where we visited Ground Zero and the 9/11 Memorial, through the Brooklyn Bridge to Brooklyn.
